NFL Week 4, 2026: what an 0-3 start does to a playoff price
Week 4 of the 2026 NFL season is the first week where a bad start stops being a story and starts being math. Five teams opened the year 0-3, the most since 2021. Sunday, October 4, is the slate that decides which of those clubs are still in a normal season and which are buying a long-shot playoff contract.
This is not a pick sheet. It is how to tell a Sunday game price from a “make the playoffs” price, because people trade those as if they were the same bet.
Where the week actually is
Thursday, October 1, already counted. Cleveland beat Pittsburgh 27-24. The Browns moved to 3-1. The Steelers fell to 2-2. The rest of the week is still ahead: a Sunday slate on October 4, including Indianapolis at Washington in the early London window, and Atlanta at New Orleans on Monday night, October 5.
By Sunday night, every team will have four results, or be about to play its fourth on Monday. Four games is a quarter of the regular season. That is why Week 4 is when season-long markets start to separate from the weekend board.
What 0-3 has meant
A count published on September 30 put five clubs at 0-3, and put the historical rescue job in plain terms: seven teams in NFL history have reached the playoffs after an 0-3 start, and one of them was last year’s Houston Texans. That is not “impossible.” It is rare enough that a playoff contract on an 0-3 team should be a low price, and a low price is not the same thing as zero.
The five are not the same kind of surprise. Houston and the Los Angeles Chargers came into the year with real expectations and are the shocking 0-3s. Tennessee and Miami were closer to the preseason script. Tampa Bay’s offense was already near the bottom of the league before Baker Mayfield’s dislocated thumb put the starter on the shelf for several weeks. A playoff price that treats those five clubs as one bucket is a sloppy price.
The other side of the board matters too. Las Vegas and Minnesota opened 3-0, and neither was a fashionable pick to do it. A 3-0 price is the mirror image: the market has to decide how much of the start is the team and how much is the opponents they have already played. Minnesota’s October schedule was the lighter one. Las Vegas had Kansas City, New England, Buffalo and the Rams waiting.
Two markets, two questions
A Week 4 game price asks who wins one afternoon. Injuries, rest, travel and the London clock are all inside that number. Indianapolis against Washington is a game price with a time-zone tax on top. It does not, by itself, tell you whether either club is a playoff team.
A playoff price asks whether a team finishes in the field, usually after 17 games plus whatever tiebreakers the league is using. From 0-3, the path is roughly “win 10 of the last 14,” and the remaining opponents have to cooperate. That is why an 0-3 team can be a live underdog on Sunday and a very short price to miss the playoffs at the same time. Both can be coherent.
If you only look at one of them, you will think the market is confused. It is usually answering a question you did not ask.
What to check before you trust either number
- Which contract is it. “Team wins this week,” “team wins the division,” and “team makes the playoffs” settle on different facts. Read the rule, especially around ties and clinching scenarios.
- The next four opponents, not the brand name. Houston’s next game after a 0-3 start was Dallas, then Tennessee. The Chargers drew the defending Super Bowl champions. The schedule is the price.
- Quarterback availability as a condition, not a narrative. A contract that does not say what happens if the starter sits is a different bet from one that does. Tampa Bay is the obvious 2026 example. Do not guess. Read the resolution text.
- The sportsbook number next to it. A prediction-market cent price and an American moneyline are the same idea with a different fee. The conversion is in the cents note we posted off this weekend’s baseball series.
Frequently asked
Does 0-3 end a season? No. It makes the playoff path narrow. The historical record says a few teams still get through, and most do not. A price around that idea should look unlikely, not absurd.
Should I trade the London game differently? Only in the sense that the clock is different and the sample of London games is small. It is still one game. It is not a season price.
Where does Polypick fit? Screenshot the market, the one contract you mean, and drop it into the analyzer. The useful output is whether the price and the rest of the information disagree. Agreement is a valid answer. Nothing in the read settles the game.
The same weekend has a college slate. The ranked games, and why a team on a bye can still move a title price, are in the Week 5 note.
