MLB Division Series 2026: how to read a series price
The 2026 Division Series opened on Saturday, October 3. Eight teams are left. The Wild Card round is over: three of the four series were sweeps, and the home team won three of the four. What is on the board now is a best-of-five, and a best-of-five price is a different object from a Game 1 price.
The matchups, with the better seed hosting Games 1, 2 and 5 if the series goes the distance:
- San Diego Padres at Milwaukee Brewers. Sportsbook series price on the morning of October 3: Brewers -180, Padres +150.
- Atlanta Braves at Los Angeles Dodgers. Dodgers -230, Braves +190. Los Angeles is trying to win a third straight World Series.
- New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays. Yankees -120, Rays +100. Tampa Bay is the No. 1 seed in the American League, looking for a first title.
- Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians. Guardians -140, White Sox +120. Chicago is two seasons removed from a 121-loss club and is in this round anyway.
Those are sportsbook series prices, not prediction-market prints, and they include the book’s margin. The conversion into a clean percent is the companion note. This one is about what the contract is asking.
A series is not Game 1
Game 1 can be a bullpen game, a scheduled ace, or a matchup that will not be repeated in Game 2. Atlanta’s rotation is the example people were discussing on October 3: Chris Sale had just closed out the Wild Card round and was not lined up for the series opener, so the Braves were looking at a bullpen game in Game 1 against a Dodgers rotation that still had its front end available. A Game 1 price can move a lot on that fact. A series price should move less, because Games 2 through 5 put the scheduled starters back in the pool.
If a market you are looking at does not say “wins the series,” do not treat the number as the series. Screenshot the title of the contract, not just the two logos.
Home field is three games, not a vibe
Games 1, 2 and 5 are in the higher seed’s park. If it goes five, Milwaukee, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay and Cleveland host the last game. That is already inside the series price. It is not an extra edge you discovered. The Wild Card round just showed home teams winning three of four series, after several years in which home teams won those series less often. One round is not a new law. It is a reminder that a short series has a lot of noise, which is why a -180 favorite is not an 80 percent favorite. The arithmetic is in the other post. The -180 Brewers price is about 64 percent before you even remove the book’s margin.
Futures are a third market
A World Series price is not the Division Series price with a different label. The Dodgers can be a strong series favorite against Atlanta and still be well short of a coin flip to win the title, because they would have to win another round after this one. The Brewers and the Rays are No. 1 seeds that have never won a World Series. That is a story. It is not, by itself, a reason their series price is wrong.
Eight teams means sixteen possible World Series pairings, and last year’s final (Toronto and Los Angeles) is already impossible. You do not need a ranking of those pairings to read a Division Series contract. You need to know which round the contract settles in.
Frequently asked
Why doesn’t the favorite’s price match the underdog’s? Because a sportsbook builds in a margin. The two American prices imply probabilities that add up to more than 100 percent. A prediction market quotes yes and no against a dollar and charges a fee on the trade instead. Same game, different wrapper.
Does a sweep in the Wild Card round tell me who wins a best-of-five? No. It tells you the first round was short. Best-of-five still fails favorites all the time. The price is the market’s attempt to say how often.
What should I upload? The series market, if that is the question you have, or Game 1, if that is the question. The analyzer reads the screenshot you give it. It cannot repair a screenshot of the wrong contract, and it does not guarantee the side it leans toward.
